When a Child Says Thank you
Dr. Bradd Hemker Reflects on the Sacred Work of Pediatric Hospice Care
NorthStar Care Community Presents: The Life’s Big Moments Blog — March 2026
Dr. Bradd Hemker shares his experience with Jordan Carson, spokeswoman for NorthStar Care Community Life’s Big Moments
There are moments in this work that do not fade.
Moments that do not grow quieter with time.
Moments that live in the heart long after the visit ends.
For Dr. Bradd Hemker, pediatric hospice physician with NorthStar Care Community, one of those moments is simple. Profound. Sacred.
It is when a child looks at him and says, “Thank you.”
You Are Not Alone
“I think all of us want to know that we’re not alone,” Dr. Hemker reflects.
Especially in the moments when a child’s medical journey takes a different path.
When cure is no longer possible.
When time feels fragile.
Hospice does not change the diagnosis.
But it changes the experience.
“It’s about showing that child and family that they’re not alone. That someone cares enough to be thinking about them, even in their darkest and hardest moments.”
In pediatric hospice, care means showing up.
Showing up creates comfort.
And comfort, even in the hardest moments, can make space for joy.
Saying Yes — Even in the Most Critical Moments
Pediatric hospice is not available everywhere. In many states, families do not have access to specialized care for children at end of life.
Here in Michigan, we are remarkably fortunate.
Through programs offered by Hospice of Michigan, Arbor Hospice and Centrica Care Navigators— members of NorthStar Care Community — pediatric hospice services are available across the state.
Dr. Hemker speaks of the deep honor he feels:
“I feel very blessed and honored to work with this team for as long as I have.”
That blessing extends beyond bedside care. Through a safe partnership with ICU physicians and children’s hospitals, families are able to transport even critically ill children home.
“There used to be a barrier, that a child was ‘too sick’ to go home. From a hospice perspective, that shouldn’t be a thing. And now it’s not.”
With careful coordination and medical support, children can spend their final days where they most want to be:
In their room.
In their bed.
In their home.
Not surrounded by hospital monitors, but by family.
Gestures of Grace
Ask Dr. Hemker about one of his favorite memories, and he smiles.
“The sloth story.”
One young patient loved sloths. Her one wish? To see one in person.
Through a special program called “Gestures of Grace” we were able to make this happen, you can hear more of this story in the video. Gestures of Grace does more than bring a sloth into a home. The program may cover rent for a month. Pay a utility bill. Remove a financial burden so a parent can focus entirely on their child.
- It relieves stress.
- It creates space.
- It makes room for moments that matter.
And sometimes, it brings a sloth.
When a Child Says Thank You
Dr. Hemker has cared for children for many years. He knows the outcomes. He understands the fragility.
But when a child says, “Thank you,” it changes something.
“It’s remarkably humbling, especially knowing this child won’t survive.”
The gratitude of a child.
The gratitude of a family.
A simple smile at home, surrounded by love.
“Sometimes the smiles are even more powerful than the words.”
Those are the images he carries. The scenes that stay with him. The reason he continues this sacred work.
The diagnosis may not change.
But the moment can.
Not alone in the unknown,
but surrounded by steady, compassionate care.
Life’s Big Moments
At NorthStar Care Community, we believe that life’s biggest moments are not always loud or dramatic.
Sometimes they are quiet.
A child at home.
A sloth reaching gently forward.
A physician at the bedside.
A whispered “thank you.”
A smile that says everything.
And in those moments, care becomes something more than medicine.
It becomes love made visible.
